STRUGGLING Bridport’s playing budget will remain the same all season and no talks have been staged over boosting transfer funds, manager Rob Marquis has revealed.

Bridport have won just one game all season and have been forced to recruit inexperienced players and those from lower leagues.

That strategy has translated poorly into a Toolstation Western League Premier Division which is arguably the strongest it has been in years following the summer FA reshuffle.

Marquis feels the Bees are crying out for a “seasoned” striker to help reverse their fortunes, keeping the ball in the opponents’ final third and therefore relieving pressure on a creaking defence.

“There haven’t been conversations,” Marquis said when quizzed over the possibility of increasing cash to recruit players.

“I was told from the beginning of the season that it is what it is and we’re not moving on it, which I accepted.

“I’ve had players saying: ‘You can have my wages and put it towards getting another player in’.

“I’m in between a rock and a hard place. I don’t think the players are out there. What I need is a striker that can not only finish but can make chances.

“I need a seasoned striker, desperately. Even if I had more money, I don’t know where that seasoned striker is at the moment.

“I’ve been sniffing around and asking a few questions. What sort of money would it take?

“If Shaun (Annetts, assistant) felt the right player became available, we’d go the extra mile.

“It wouldn’t be out of the question to do all we could to get the right player.”

Bridport return to league action this weekend, hosting Millbrook on Saturday (3pm).
