A SERIES of events unpicking lives that are interconnected will be depicted in a dramatic production by Dorchester Youth Theatre.

The events in DYT’s Senior Company production ‘in/tension’ will lead to a final, unforgettable moment.

This very different offering from the county town’s youth theatre company will be performed at Dorchester Corn Exchange on Thursday, March 5 and Friday, March 6.

Following on from the success at the National Theatre’s Connections Festival, and last year’s sell out performances of The Crucible – DYT are delivering a ‘home grown’ production.

Finding a script with suitable parts for the 22-plus members has its challenges, so youth theatre director Jo Simons decided to have a different approach; using ideas from the cast for a theme, and then to form a storyline and to develop this through improvisation techniques and plenty of idea swapping.

Jo said: “This has been a huge challenge, not only are the company coming up with the ideas themselves but we are having to make sure that the story makes sense and flows well.

“Just because we may think it will work or we find certain things funny, our audience may not.

“I think the key to devising is to not be self-indulgent.

“It has been an exciting project and I am really proud of the maturity of the company throughout the process, it is probably the hardest form of drama. We are excited to share it with our audience.”

The play addresses some sensitive and controversial issues, but also uses humour and includes some thought-provoking scenes.

Tickets for in/tension are £7 for adults and £4 for under 18s. The play is suitable for those aged 12 or over. They are available from Dorchester Arts Box Office.
