COLYTON 6

LYME REGIS 0

LYME Regis began the new Devon & Exeter League Premier Division season with an inauspicious 6-0 defeat at Colyton.

The Seasiders, undergoing a big rebuild under new boss Kevin Turner, have been given a difficult first four games of the campaign.

Coming up against old adversaries in Colyton, now managed by ex-Beaminster boss Neil Holt, Lyme made a poor start and were 2-0 down before their first big chance.

It fell to Dan Rendell deep inside the box but the Lyme maestro failed to make clean contact and the opportunity went begging.

From there, Lyme looked short of creation in attacking areas, a stark contrast to Colyton who went on to score four more goals and could have added more but for some wasteful finishing.

In the end, Charlie Bye finished with a brace, while Callum Somers, Jack Richards, Bobby Henderson and Stuart Liddiard also got on the scoresheet.

Speaking post-match, Turner said: “It’s a bigger project than I first thought but what was disappointing from my point of view was that we offered nothing.

“We just didn’t put up a fight. Give Colyton credit, they had a game plan, some really exciting forwards and played to their strengths.

“They were a yard sharper and we just weren’t at the races.”

Lyme play their first home fixture of the season, against holders Alphington, on Saturday (3pm).
