ALPHINGTON 8

LYME REGIS 0

LYME Regis exited the East Devon Senior Cup with an 8-0 thrashing at the hands of league rivals Alphington on the Exwick 3G pitch – but not without confusion surrounding the score.

Due to the inclement weather, officials agreed to move the match to a synthetic surface.

The change did a depleted Lyme no good as they shipped seven second-half goals after trailing 1-0 at the break.

There was also controversy following the match with a disputed scoreline, Alphington filing for 8-0 and Lyme 7-0.

Official FA website ‘Full-Time’ also showed 7-0 but the Bridport & Lyme Regis News has received confirmation from match referee Keith Mann of the 8-0 outcome.

He said: “The trouble is, it always used to be that the referees used to fill out the sheets and send it in.

“We don’t do that now, because they’re on Full-Time. They text it off. Usually, I expect them to say: ‘What did you make it, ref?’ but nobody asked.

“I got home and I saw on the website that it was 7-0. I said to my wife: ‘That’s wrong, it’s eight’.

“I immediately sent an email to the secretary of Alphington and copied it in to the league at the same time.

“I said that according to my results sheet it wasn’t seven, it was eight. Officially, as far as I’m concerned, it was 8-0. I’ve left it at that.

“I’ve got it as eight and that’s what I’ve reported it as.”

Alphington have since confirmed that Rio Potter grabbed a hat-trick, Tre Davey scored a brace and the trio of Liam Saunders, Tom Bradford and Alec Holifield also netted.

Under East Devon Senior Cup rules, clubs are not obliged to list scorers’ names.

Lyme Regis are on Saturday away to Sturminster Newton in the Dorset Senior Trophy quarter-finals (1.30pm).
