BRIDPORT are chasing an upset against Hamble Club when the teams meet at St Mary’s Field in their Isuzu FA Vase first qualifying round tie on Saturday (3pm).

Last season, Bridport were knocked out in the first round proper following a 5-3 defeat by Royal Wootton Bassett.

Chris Herbst’s men must win two qualifying matches to match their performance in 2022/23 but first face a Hamble side established in the Wessex League Premier.

The Hampshire team ply their trade one tier above the Bees but are winless in their league after three matches, whereas Bridport have a 100 per cent record after four games.

Ahead of the tie, Herbst told the Bridport News: “We know they’re going to be a good outfit, they’re a league above and they will have quality.

“Hopefully being at home will help us. We’re confident, and rightly so, but I’m annoyed at the sloppy goals we’re conceding.

“When you play against a good side they’ll punish you and that’s something we definitely need to sharpen up on.

“We’re scoring quite a few goals, there’s goals throughout the team, so it should be a good cup tie.”

Herbst has also earmarked a good cup run this season, adding: “You always want to be in the first-round draw.

“Last season, just getting into that draw was quality, so we want to do a few steps further and get a couple of nice away ones where we haven’t been before.

“In the cup, anything can happen and the players are buzzing for it.”

Bridport are without defenders James Cox and Ryan Leader plus striker Tom Richardson for the contest.

Winners of the tie will take home £550 and the losers pocket £160.
