WEYMOUTH boss Mark Molesley has become Southend United’s new manager.

The 39-year-old has penned a three-year deal to succeed Sol Campbell at Roots Hall, as the Shrimpers ended a six-week wait to appoint their next boss.

Echosport understands Molesley, who relinquishes his role as under-21s number two at Bournemouth, will take Weymouth assistant Tom Prodomo, plus coach Joe Prodomo and two analysts from the Vitality Stadium.

Speaking to iFollow Blues, Molesley admitted his move was "bittersweet".

He said: "It’s a really exciting time for me and my assistant manager coming in.

"It’s a great day for us but it’s also a little bittersweet because I’m leaving two fantastic clubs as well, in Bournemouth and Weymouth.

"But we’re really excited by this challenge at this great football club so I’m proud to be standing here and excited by the challenge.

"After speaking with the chairman (Ron Martin) I can see he shares the same vision and work ethic to take this club onwards and upwards.

"We’ve got to open up some cracks, open up the wounds a little bit and have a look because we really want to build some strong foundations to take the club onwards and upwards.

"Sometimes that takes time but in football you’ve got to have a short-term impact for a long-term gain."

Molesley added: "We’re going to work tirelessly hard for this football club and invest all our time into the process.

"There’s plenty for us to sink our teeth into, we’re really glad to be here and excited by the challenge."

An emotional Molesley last night informed Weymouth of his decision after considering his future this week.

Weymouth are entitled to compensation from League Two club Southend with Molesley having a season to run on his deal at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Echosport understands The Terras have already received several applications to succeed Molesley as boss.

Molesley’s services were coveted after the former Bournemouth midfielder won three trophies at the Terras last season.

Just 12 days ago, Molesley led Weymouth back to the National League after a 3-0 penalty shootout win over Dartford.

Molesley was in charge at Weymouth since April 2017.
