TEIGNMOUTH 3

BRIDPORT 1

BRIDPORT slipped to a 3-1 defeat at Teignmouth in their South West Peninsula League Premier East clash at Coombe Valley.

The Bees will see the awarding of a penalty to Teignmouth with the score locked at 1-1 as the turning point in a game that ultimately goes down as their ninth loss in 14 league fixtures.

Bridport were shot-shy in the first half, neglecting to shoot despite working their way into promising positions.

Consequently, Teignmouth led at the break thanks to an Ash Donohue strike but Bridport improved in the second half and levelled five minutes into the half.

It came from a throw-in as Dan Baggs’ flick-on was allowed to bounce by the home defence and Sol Ayunga pounced for his second goal of the season.

Bridport were now on top but conceded a contentious penalty when Luke King appeared to make a legitimate slide tackle, only to be penalised inside the box.

That allowed Ryan Tresidder to step up and beat Jason Hutchings in the Bridport goal for 2-1.

Bridport had chances through Riley Weedon, Tom Richardson and Ayunga in the second half but as the Bees pushed men upfield they were hit on the counter, Donohue completing his brace.

Teignmouth then displayed expert game management to kill the game and seal all three points.

Post-match, Bridport boss Chris Herbst was left in no doubt as to the cause of his side’s defeat.

He said: “We went 1-0 down, got a goal back and we were on top. Then we got a penalty decision that was absolutely shocking.

“Luke slid across, took the ball and the referee’s given a penalty. I made a change to go for it and then it was 3-1 because we were trying to get something out of the game.

“We actually played well so it’s no criticism of us. The decision’s gone against us and it’s really knocked the wind out of us.

“It’s one of those, it’s hard to take. We were much better than last week. I couldn’t fault any of the players. Everyone played quite well.”

Bridport are next in action at home to Torrington on Saturday (3pm).
