BRIDPORT boss Chris Herbst has backed the Bees to cause an FA Vase upset against Royal Wootton Bassett Town on Saturday – but only if his players believe in themselves.

Herbst will lead the Bees out at St Mary’s Field after earning their place in the main draw thanks to a 2-0 victory over Petersfield Town.

That win was Bridport’s first in 392 days but the Bees have not tasted success since, losing heavily to Elmore and Newton Abbot Spurs after drawing 3-3 at Torridgeside.

Herbst insists Bridport’s main obstacle lies with a dip in confidence but he maintains Town, who play one level and 35 positions above them, can be beaten.

He told the Bridport News: “Anything can happen in the cup.

“We’ve got to believe, stick to our gameplan that I’m going to put out and I believe we can get a result.

“There’s players that have played 150 games at a higher level, so we do have experience. It’s just getting players to believe in themselves.

“The last two years the confidence has been knocked but we’re building that back – just believe.”

Looking at Bassett, who occupy fourth in the Hellenic League at Step 5, Herbst said: “I’ve seen they’re going well.

“To be honest, I want to focus on us and the way we set up. Then we can get something out of the game.

“It would be nice to have a cup run and take it into the league.”

Bees’ keeper Jordon Scadding returns and Bridport have no further injury concerns.

Winners of the tie claim £825 while the losers pocket £250.
