ALL country folk know that poisonous ragwort is a threat to animals.
Nevertheless, I feel that your correspondent Ed Hansford, of Bridport, is being unreasonable in criticising local councils for not clearing ragwort from the vegetation at the roadside.
I do not see cattle or horses grazing on the side of the roads.
So why should the local authorities spend taxpayers’ money cutting or pulling ragwort? Ragwort is very beneficial to bees, butterflies and other wildlife.
And owners with livestock should make their own decision on whether to keep their fields clear of ragwort.
As a farmer’s son, now retired, I would not expect the council to do my job for me.
