This year (2014)) the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) celebrates its 75th Anniversary and the work it does and the advice it gives are as necessary and essential today as it was all those years ago.

In fact, one might argue even more so.

In 2007 I was appointed as the representative of the West Dorset District Council to the Trustee Board of the Bridport CAB. Although not involved in the day to day running of the bureau, I am, nevertheless, mindful of the work done and the advice given to many people from all walks of life.

The CAB advises on debt, benefits, homelessness and family and matrimonial matters to name but just a few issues that come through its door at 45 South Street, Bridport: and without the aid and assistance of the CAB, many would, undoubtedly, lose out in prosecuting their rights, not having the means to use other professional services.

Last year alone, the CAB helped over 3,000 people resolve 6,000 issues, many I suspect arising from the recession that hit hard both individuals and families alike, leaving everlasting scars: hence the importance of the CAB.

The CAB is a charity, is not funded by central government and relies very heavily on dedicated volunteers to fill a gap in society in providing free and confidential advice to everyone who needs it.

In celebrating the 75th birthday of the Citizens Advice Bureau, I hope the service it gives will continue to be supported by everyone: for who knows when we ourselves might need it!

Citizens Advice, London are promoting our service by encouraging everyone to sign an online pledge to show that advice matters – citizensadvice.org.uk/adviceforthefuture”.
