I refer to the article in the Bridport News of May 22 under the heading of ‘Final salute to hero and poppy champion’ by Rene Gerryts.

This is right on the button and I congratulate Rene on such a good article.

Ron was a member of this club for the last ten years.

We met at St Mary’s Church on the first Sunday after my wife and I had moved into Bridport (July 11, 2004).

As I was leaving the service I saw this gentleman coming towards me sporting a Queen’s Own Royal West Kent badge and I wondered how this could be.

I approached him and, as they say, the rest is history. Together with Ted Olbrecht and Ken Carter we set up our own Bridport branch of the 62 Club, meeting on the first Tuesday of the month in Vernons Court. They were all very good company and it was a privilege to know them.

Heroes all, may they now rest in peace.
