THE river at West Bay is now clean enough to allow watersports to take place therein.

Perhaps even water polo again or the Bridport Swimming Club’s regatta, including the extremely exciting comic interlude held on a raft in the middle of the river basin.

Each of these activities saw crowds of spectators enjoying a fun-packed afternoon or evening followed by dancing on the prom during the summer months.

As a boy I enjoyed taking part in both these events, as did my father before me. In fact, my father won a gold medal for his diving skills.

But all of a sudden back in the 80s the river was deemed to be polluted and swimming was banned.

It seems strange that West Dorset District Council can find money to fund these schemes but cannot find just a few pounds to put right the shambles which they created at the entrance to West Bay, something that was totally unnecessary in the first place.

Not forgetting the creation of a new purpose-built public toilet, only to be closed a couple years later.

They spent thousands of pounds to refurbish the old facility on the West pier, which is hardly big enough to swing a cat around so to speak.

Come along, you councillors, let’s really try to get something right one day very soon.
