I can’t agree more with Bridport North Councillor Keith Day when he states West Bay is a concrete jungle (Bridport News, April 17).

Though I have to admit it wasn’t until my auntie pointed this out to me a few years ago that I started to formulate a simple solution.

The problem as I see it is one of texture. The harbour area is mainly formed of perfectly clean concrete and tarmaced roads. There are grassy areas but these again are marred by more concrete.

Before I propose what some would suggest as a bonkers solution can I first question how we currently market West Bay to the tourism industry? All brown signage leading up to West Bay indicates it is a harbour, yet I wouldn’t consider a harbour to be a family friendly place to holiday. Instead I would consider it a place of work and business with constant commercial movement.

The business and tourism communities, including the business chamber, are debating the image of West Bay but I would suggest we revert it back to being a resort.

As we know, the renaming of Bridport Harbour to West Bay was intended to develop the location into a resort but, as with all good ideas, time and place has to be on your side and the railway was subsequently removed. If developed into a resort rather than marketed as a harbour, brown signs would instead point to the direction of ‘The Beaches’.

I would bet that a large percentage of traffic which uses the A35 Crown roundabout don’t realise how close they are to the sea and if they did would take a short travel break down the bay, boosting trade.

The yearly influx of relocators and the exposure by Broadchurch means the issue will be evermore highlighted so we should act now.
