RYAN Hayter has served Bridport with distinction for the last decade but there is still something the Bees’ captain craves – some silverware.
The central defender is hoping he can break his duck next season and finally lift that elusive first trophy with the St Mary’s Field outfit.
Hayter has enjoyed some decent cup runs during his time at Bridport, however, in recent years the team has crashed out of knockout tournaments in the early rounds.
And while he knows that going far in the FA Cup is not a very realistic target, Hayter is wishing for some good performances in the other competitions the Bees will be taking part in.
“It would be nice to have a good run in the FA Vase and Les Phillips Cup,” he said.
“I’ve never had a good run in the Vase while I’ve been at the club so getting through a few rounds of that would be great.
“The best cup run I’ve had at Bridport was when we got to the semi-final of the Les Phillips about five seasons ago.
“A good run in the Les Phillips would be ideal but in the last few seasons we seem to have gone out of it with a whimper.
“A good cup run gives you something to concentrate on towards the end of the season when things can become a bit stagnant if you’ve got nothing to play for.”
He went on to add: “I’ve never won anything at the club and when I finally finish playing it would be nice to know you’ve won something.”
The league fixtures may not be out yet but the Bees do know who they will be facing first in the two major cup competitions.
They have been drawn at home against Highworth Town of the Hellenic League Premier Division in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup on August 16.
Victory would see them rewarded with a trip to either Bitton or Blackfield & Langley a fortnight later.
In FA Vase first round qualifying, the Bees welcome Wessex League Premier Division outfit Totton & Eling to St Mary’s Field on September 6.
Bridport begin their pre-season programme next Tuesday when they host Portland United (7.45pm) in a match that will give boss Trevor Senior the chance to assess where his players are in their preparations for the forthcoming campaign.
