SOPHIE Keech’s impressive form continued when she claimed victory in the amateur competition at the Roehampton Open Gold Challenge Cup.

The youngster from Axminster who plays for Parkstone Golf Club, shot rounds of 72 and 74 to finish on a two-over-par total of 146, putting her fourth in the overall standings, six shots behind the professional winner Emily Taylor.

Keech, who was also adapting to her new golf clubs in a competitive situation, was in the same group as one of her fellow England squad members, and knew after being the leading amateur in the clubhouse after round one that she had to play a solid second round.

Keech said: “She knew the scores were tight and she needed a perfect short game with putts to drop like the morning round.”

Accompanied by a school friend as her caddie, Keech remarked that their banter kept her going at difficult times and the Millfield School pupil sank a great putt under pressure to secure the amateur title.

Last month, Keech also helped Millfield School reach the ISGA finals, which take place in Carnoustie at the end of the month.
