LYME REGIS 1

ALPHINGTON 1

(Lyme win 4-3 on penalties)

LYME Regis pulled off a major upset in the East Devon Senior Cup, beating Alphington 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Davey Fort.

Penalty-saving expert Will Meech was the hero for the Seasiders, saving twice in the shootout to help Lyme earn victory.

Lyme had to battle back from a slow start and went 1-0 down, Jonny Gaskins putting the Alphas ahead at the break.

However, Lyme’s work rate was a real highlight of the tie as the Dorset side gave the visitors no respite.

And the Seasiders were rewarded when the diligent Mike Calverley pounced on a parry with ten minutes to go, taking the tie into extra time.

Alphington had the better of play in the additional 30 minutes but Meech remained resolute as the tie headed to penalties.

Calverley scored first for Lyme before Alex Rockett was denied by a superb save.

Rob Fellingham and Michael Knight were successful for Lyme but Meech’s brilliance opened the door for the Seasiders, allowing Toby Fowler to win the game with his first-ever spot-kick.

Delighted Lyme Regis boss Kevin Turner said: “It was a great game.

“First half they dominated and played some good football but we kept our shape and defended well.

“We got into the game slowly. The effort we put in it was a hard slog but I’m really proud of them.”

Lyme Regis next travel to Clyst Valley on Saturday (2pm), with new signing Craig Every set for his debut.
