LYME REGIS 0 WINKLEIGH 2

LYME Regis delivered an improved display but still lost 2-0 against Winkleigh in the Devon & Exeter League Premier Division.

Kevin Turner’s men put up a bigger fight than the return fixture when Winkleigh, who sit third, returned a 5-0 scoreline.

However, the Seasiders are finding goals hard to come by and have only netted five times in eight games.

Winkleigh went 1-0 up when Alex Rowe misjudged the flight of a long ball, allowing the ball to bounce and Will Hamill latched on to it before beating keeper Chris Higgs.

Winkleigh’s second came in fortuitous fashion when pinball in the box led to a fine Higgs save, but the rebound clattered the woodwork and then hit Josh Daines’ knee for a luckless own goal.

Lyme’s energetic winger Nathan Womersley caused havoc all game and several good crosses narrowly evaded a teammate.

Lyme’s build-up play and ball retention was vastly improved on previous weeks but the elusive goal remains a hindrance for the Davey Fort side.

Turner said: “We certainly gave them a game, we put in a good shift, competed well and matched them in every department. The only thing lacking was taking the chances we had.

“I was more than pleased with the effort and the football we did play at times. We are looking fitter, which is credit to the lads.”

Lyme visit Sandford on Saturday (3pm) with Gary Knight (hamstring), Michael Knight (groin) and Higgs (finger) all doubts.

New signing Alex Rockett and the returning Rob Fellingham boost Lyme’s ranks.
