UPLYME & LYME REGIS 113 (2pts) lost to FILLEIGH 114-2 (22pts) by 8 wickets

UPLYME & Lyme Regis suffered their first setback of the Devon League D Division season with a resounding eight-wicket defeat at Filleigh.

The visitors, playing only their second game of the campaign due to the bad weather, were dealt a blow before the start when the Whittington brothers pulled out of the fixture.

Youngsters Alfie Bellworthy and Tyler Wellman stepped up from the seconds to replace them.

Filleigh won the toss and put their opponents in knowing that the pace of Zimbabwean Mark Mbofana could cause havoc on a drying wicket.

He tied up one end and, as is often the case, wickets fell to bowlers at the other with only Nick Dinnison (24) and Mark Brimicombe (25) offering any resistance.

At 77-8, the Uplyme outfit were in trouble, and only a late flurry of runs from bowler Paddy Barraclough (18) took the total to three figures to secure a batting point.

Uplyme needed to take early wickets in the Filleigh reply, and their spirits were lifted when young bowler Rhys Dav-ies had Mbofana caught by Barraclough with the score on 18.

However, opener Harrison and number three Henry dug in and took the score to 86 before Uplyme skipper Steve Batey bowled Henry.

But Harrison stood firm and saw his side home with eight wickets to spare.

UPLYME & LYME REGIS SECONDS 137 lost to WHIMPLE SECONDS 138-4 by 6 wickets

LIKE the firsts, Uplyme’s second team was also comfortably beaten in their last outing, at home against their counterparts from Whimple.

On a damp wicket and with overcast conditions favourable to bowlers, Whimple invited Uplyme to bat after winning the toss ahead of the Devon League Second XI D Division East showdown.

Openers Eddie Clarke and Dave Norman saw off the accurate opening spell of Adrian Whitton and Matt Parker, but both perished when they tried to increase the run rate.

However, a middle order partnership of 50 between Derek Wellman (20) and Wesley Holmes (30) raised hopes that a competitive score could be posted.

Wallace Blackmore continued to attack and hit a number of boundaries before he was bowled by Johno Burden for 21.

The resistance then crumbled with the loss of the last four wickets for six runs, leaving Uplyme on a disappointing 137.

Whimple also started slowly against the accurate bowling of Wesley Holmes and Black-more, and it was Blackmore who made the breakthrough when he trapped Simon van Grudgins leg before for seven.

Will Marshall took his first wicket for Uplyme when he had Dan McConachie caught by Daley Holmes at point.

Daley Holmes then came into the attack with his off-spin and although he took two more wickets he did not have enough runs to play with.

It was left to the experienced Grant Northover to see Whim-ple home with an unbeaten 37.

Both Uplyme teams hope to be at full strength and get back to winning ways this Saturday against local rivals Seaton.
