John Fowler Cup Final

LUSO-CHARD 2 WAYTOWN HOUNDS 4

WAYTOWN Hounds returned to winning ways at the best possible time as they captured the John Fowler Cup at St Mary’s Field.

Watched by more than 120 spectators, the Hounds got off to the perfect start when Matt Read caught the Luso keeper unawares and bent in a right-foot shot inside the opening minute.

However, Luso were clearly up for the fight and after 15 minutes they were back on level terms following a slight mix-up at the back.

Play was switching from end to end and on the half-hour mark, captain Steve White played a perfectly weighted pass that split the Luso defence and allowed Dan Dunford to hammer home.

The Hounds doubled their advantage 10 minutes into the second period with the goal of the game.

A string of passes down the left-hand side led to Edd Stephenson cutting in before picking out Tom Menaldino, who set himself up with his left foot before picking out the top-right corner with his right.

Luso would not lie down and they pulled a goal back after the unfortunate Tom Rutland diverted a shot into his own net.

But with 15 minutes left on the clock, Read played in Menaldino and he beat the keeper from a tight angle to secure victory.
