BRIDPORT and Beaminster were both victims of the weather as virtually the entire Dorset League fixture programme was washed out at the weekend.

And for Bridport, it was the second time this season that rain has forced one of their matches to be abandoned.

Captain Liam Toohill won the toss at home to Kingston Lacy and, knowing that rain would strike at some point, opted to bowl.

But only 9.1 overs were possible at Brewery Fields although by that stage the hosts had taken two Lacy wickets to secure a bowling point.

“I chose to bowl as that was our best option for picking up points,” said Toohill. “Alex Lee took a wicket with the fourth ball of the match and he then affected a run out when his bullet throw to keeper Mark Tozer allowed Mark to turn and run the batsman out at the bowler’s end with a direct hit.

“This got us one bowling point so when the match was abandoned we picked up six points rather than the standard five.

“It was annoying the game got rained off as we looked set for a decent points haul, but everyone else in the league got called off so it works itself out.”

The next test for Bridport doesn’t come any tougher when they go to Division Four leaders Ware-ham on Saturday.

Toohill’s men trail the team in first by 57 points and would need Wareham to suffer the collapse of all collapses to overtake them.

In Beaminster’s case, until Saturday, like most teams, they had seen all their games this season reach a conclusion.

They managed 34 overs against Bournemouth at Chapel Gate and Fred Everitt was left wondering what might have been.

The visitors were on 138-4 when play finished with Everitt, back in the side after missing the defeat to Witchampton, left stranded on 81 not out. Beaminster entertain Cranborne next.

Beaminster Seconds had reached 47-1 at home to Stalbridge Thirds before that was also abandoned and they go to Winfrith Newburgh on Saturday.
