Veterans’ Section

THE veterans’ competition was cancelled on Thursday because of the prolonged rain but the following day they met up with the ladies for their autumn battle of the sexes, writes Peter Crowter.

The spring match had been won by the men as had every match since 1998 and that year, under the captaincy of Madeline Skelly, was the last time the ladies had emerged victors.

The other match that year was halved. Well, has the tide turned and is history going to repeat itself. On Friday, the match was halved 5½ -5½ and the pink ribbon, which has been attached to the wooden spoon for the last 14 years, has now been joined by its blue counterpart. Will the pink ribbon be removed next spring. Watch this space.

Ladies’ Section Tuesday was quite dreadful, the weather forecast was not too bad but in the event it was cold, windy and very wet, writes Lyn Hargrave.

The conditions were absolutely appalling, bunkers like suet puddings, greens soggy with wet top dressing making putting really tricky, and the rough waving like tentacles grabbing the club heads, quite the most exhausting medal round of this year.

Of the brave, some might say foolhardy, 24 ladies that went out, only a valiant 10 finished.
