BRIDPORT manager Chris Herbst revealed how a team meeting 24 hours prior helped inspire the 2-0 win over Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police.

Herbst’s men were fresh off the back of the harrowing 5-0 loss to Okehampton Argyle, a performance he labelled as the worst in his 18-month tenure.

Herbst insisted there would be ‘repercussions’ and pulled his players into the Beehive to watch the club’s Veo camera, a tool used to film matches pitchside, to pick the performance apart.

Despite encountering some resistance, Herbst insisted the meeting was a good exercise and admitted similar sessions will take place in future.

The summit seemed to work as second-half goals for Fred Parsons and Sol Ayunga handed Bridport all three points, maintaining their push for second spot in the South West Peninsula League Premier East.

Speaking to the Bridport News, he said: “You could tell after the first 10 minutes that we were shaky. They were trying to implement what we wanted them to do at the start.

“Second half we came out of the blocks flying, took them apart and should’ve had more. The confidence now is sky-high.

“Monday, we had a meeting with Veo watching all the stuff back through, picked out everything and went through it.

“From then, they’ve taken it on board and the positivity is back. Hopefully we can kick on now and finish the season strong, target another four wins.”

He added: “It wasn’t a hammering meeting. It was trying to be productive and constructive.

“People were questioning what we were saying, so I had it on the Veo. We slowed it down and went through everything. They can’t really deny it.

“There are people holding their hands up and saying they’ve got to do better. That’s shown out there.

“We will have more meetings but hopefully more positive meetings as well as the negatives.

“It was an eye-opener for them. They don’t see it the way we’re seeing it. When you’re playing and when you’re watching it’s completely different.

“The ones that have seen it, people have spoken to me privately and said they’ve got to do better, so I’m happy. I like that the players are owning it, that’s what they need to do.”

Herbst also highlighted the display of Ayunga, whose searing pace proved a real thorn in Stoke’s side.

Ayunga now has 10 goals in 21 appearances for Bridport this season, trailing only Riley Weedon (16) in the goalscoring charts.

Herbst added: “I just think it was nerves because the last two games have been creeping up a bit. We were nervous to push bodies forward.

“I said to them to just go out, I wanted a high press and to go and get them. Second half we blew them away.

“A really solid defence, good all over the park and Sol was back to his best, stretching the defence. It was good to have Riley (Weedon) and Fred (Parsons) back.

“Our bench, the five who came on are so strong and there are people missing out as well.”

Three points kept Bridport in second place but both Crediton and Okehampton could overtake them should they win their matches in hand.

Bridport have four fixtures of the league season remaining and travel to sixth-placed Newton Abbot Spurs on Saturday (3pm).
