HANNAH Whaley put in a strong performance to take first place in the 18-35 category with a score of 330 points in the first round of Rockburn’s Summer Bouldering Series.

Clementine Thompson gave a great show for second, while the adult highest score across the board was Gorden Snell in the men’s 18-35 with 440.

The female 36-55 category was led by Magali Pascual, achieving 240 points on the day, with Sara Glazebrook coming second on her first competition event.

The under-18s’ mixed category saw Sam Hattrell claim first with 420 points and Will Staziker put in a strong performance to achieve second with 370 while third place was taken by Ellen McKensie, with the most composed performance in this category, achieving 345.

The male categories were strongly contested and behind Snell was Pietro Cavellini with 390 and Portland climber Dave ‘Crusher’ Staples on 370.

The male 36-55 category was led by Gavin Alner, achieving 400 points from his 20 climbs, with Ben Symonds taking second with 310 and Stephen Grier taking third with 270.

The series incorporates three rounds, each demonstrating a different format of competition in indoor bouldering.

Competitors need to participate in two of the three rounds to be eligible for qualification for the finals, which will be held on Sunday, September 2 at the Rockburn, located in Priory Lane, Bridport.

Age categories for the series are split into under-18s mixed, with a minimum age of 12, 18-35 male/female, 36-55 male/female and 55+ mixed.

Points are achieved by achieving climbing routes of differing grades with a maximum of 500 points available per event.

The format for round one was Rockburn’s own take on a ‘Flash’ competition.

Competitors had two attempts at 10 different problems.

Maximum points were achieved by completing the problem in a single attempt before going on to repeat that climb for a second time.
