ELEVEN pairs of ladies took on their veterans’ counterparts for a Greensomes Matchplay competition for the Wooden Spoon Trophy.

The ladies are always very keen to overcome their gentlemen opponents and this year was no different.

The weather favoured the ladies and every pair took as much advantage of it as they could.

A very strong northerly wind blew all morning.

The men, who are able to hit the ball higher and further than the ladies, could only stand and stare as their efforts were blown towards the cliffs and, in some cases, the sea.

The ladies were able to keep their game a little more controlled.

All of this resulted in some very close matches and a tied match.

The Wooden Spoon will be sporting both pink and blue ribbons for the coming year.

Meanwhile, the Ladies’ October Medal was played for by six members on Saturday and another 22 on Tuesday.

The scores on both days were very respectable.

The Division A winner was Di Loving (nett 73); Divison B: Sally Woolmington (nett 74) and Division C: Margaret Thompson (nett 78).

Julie Oliver won the competition for the least putts with just 30.

The Stableford competition was won by Linda Knapp with 22 points.

Men’s Section

FORTY-TWO members competed for the Walker Cup, a Foursomes Flag competition.

In dry but overcast conditions, Gavin Gay and Geoff Hunt finished their round on the 18th green, 40ft from the pin.

They were overtaken by Roger Galpin and Tom Hunt, who finished just 20ft away.

However, the winners of the Walker Cup were Peter Marshall and Ben Carruthers who finished with their ball in the 18th hole.

The Midweek Medal saw 15 entries with Jimmy Gbadebo (81-12-69) taking first prize.

Mike Barter (87-17-70) was second, with Les Herbert (92-21-71) third.

The October Junior Medal had four entries with Ben Carruthers (90-22-68) taking the first prize.

The runner-up was Kieran Mulhall (77-8-69).

This week’s competition for the veterans was a three-ball better-ball tournament played in medal format.

Twenty teams took part and the results were very close; the first three teams all finished on nett 64 followed by three teams on 65.

The winners, on countback, were R Gill, T Udall and G Peach.

Runners-up were B Savery, D Smith and M Conway and, in third place, were K Brown, I Perry and M Stockton.

* Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club was represented at the Grand Final of the National Hall of Fame Golf Championships, a national competition open to all golf clubs throughout England, Scotland and Wales, played in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Ian Kearley (handicap 13) qualified for the regional final by winning the March Medal at Bridport with a nett score of 65.

He represented the club at the event, held to Padbrook Park Golf Club in Devon, and finished in first place with a winning score of 35 Stable-ford points.

This meant that Kearley would be the South West Representative at the climax of the tournament, which was played over 36 on two top courses in the East Midlands – Worksop Golf Club and Notts Golf Club (Holinwell).

Although he didn’t finish in the prizes, it was nonetheless a great achievement for him to win the reg-ional round and to represent Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club and the South West Region at the Grand Final of this prestigious event.
