SOPHIE Keech has been awarded the privileged position of Millfield School golf captain for 2013-14.

The accolade is another feather in the Lyme Regis teenager’s cap as she continues her development as a player.

Keech, who will be the figurehead for both the boys and girls at the prestigious school, said: “I feel honoured to have been chosen and I am excited about the challenging year ahead.

“I enjoy being part of the Millfield team and my aim as captain will be to help the side retain many of the team and individual trophies.”

This month has been a thrilling one for Keech, who is studying BTEC Sport and Golf with the continued support of her coach Karen Nicholls.

Not only did she win the Junior Telegraph Qualifier Open at Parkstone, her new home club, but she also took part in the World Junior Championships in Jakarta.

During her stay in Indonesia, Keech got to meet the city’s governor and was even snapped by the paparazzi on her arrival at the airport.

Playing in 47 degree heat on an immaculate but extremely tough course, she put herself in a great position in the final round where she sat second going to the 15th hole.

Unfortunately, she then found the water and eventually fell back to eighth, but it was still a top-class ranking in a field that included some of the best youngsters from all over the world.

As a result of her fine performance, Keech has now been invited by the Chinese and Malaysian golf associations to play in their championships later in the year. She has also been invited back to Jakarta for winter training.

She added: “I am so excited by these opportunities and sincerely hope I will be to accept them and play in the championships.”

Just 28 hours after leaving the heat of Indonesia, Keech then took part in the British Ladies’ Championships in Wales, which began with two days of stroke play in wet and wild conditions.

After two solid rounds saw her make the cut, she was then drawn against fellow English player Alex Peters (+3) and through the first nine holes was sitting pretty at four up.

However, Peters then fought back to eventually square the match on the 18th before sneaking the win in the play-off just two holes later.

Next up for Keech is a trip to Nottingham for the England Schools final where she was champion in 2011 and runner-up on countback last year.

She will then head to Woodbury Park in Devon to play in the Dorset County Match Week side before dashing to Rye just 24 hours later to represent Millfield at the HMC Finals where the school team is hoping to retain its title.

The next couple of months will also see her take part in the British Girls’ Open Amateur Championships in Fairhaven, the British Ladies’ Open Amateur Stroke Play in Ayrshire in Scotland, and the English Wom-en’s Open near Birmingham.
