A HOST of special events will be held in Lyme Regis next month to celebrate the Queen's official 90th birthday.

Celebrations will take place from June 8 until June 12 in the seaside town - including parties, displays, fireworks and parades.

The Queen celebrated her actual birthday on April 21 when a beacon on the beach was lit by Lyme Regis mayor Cllr Owen Lovell.

The official annual celebration of Her Majesty’s birthday is on Saturday June 11, when the Queen’s birthday parade, otherwise known as Trooping the Colour, will be held.

During the festivities, a photographic display of Lyme Regis during the Queen’s life compiled by Lyme Regis Museum, will be on show at the Jubilee Pavilion.

Lyme Regis Town Council has organised the programme of events and approved a £5,000 budget for the celebrations.

Cllr Lovell said: “The town council is hosting a celebration of the Queen’s life and hope the residents of Lyme Regis will take part in the events that have been arranged for their benefit.

“We hope there is something for everyone in this programme and we look forward to receiving the community’s support in these special celebrations.“

The celebrations will begin in Lyme Regis on Wednesday, June 8, with a cream tea for the over 70s at the Alexandra Hotel at 2.30pm.

On Saturday June 11, a party will be held for Lyme Regis children of preschool and primary school ages, from 2pm until 4.30pm at Woodmead Halls. The party will include games and food, with music from Chris Hutchings of Wessex Star Disco.

Tickets are free, available from St Michael’s School, with proof of Lyme Regis residency required for non-pupils.

Preschool children must be accompanied by an adult.

Also on the Saturday, Lyme Regis Football Club will be holding a cream tea at Davey Fort from 3pm to 5pm. There will also be a raffle and the bar will be open.

At St Michael’s Parish Church, a full peal of bells will ring on 11 June at 3pm, lasting for almost three hours.

Also on June 11, a disco will be held for people aged 11 to 16 at Woodmead Halls from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Tickets are free, available at the Hub or at the town council offices.

Rounding off the celebrations on the Saturday will be a fireworks display from the Cobb at 10pm.

On Sunday, June 12, the annual civic parade, including representatives from local organisations, will leave from outside Langmoor Gardens at 9.40am, leading to St Michael’s Parish Church for the civic service at 10am.

Also on the Sunday, an adults’ lunch will be held at the Woodmead Halls from 12.30pm to 4pm, with entertainment from the Lyme Luggers ukulele group.
