SPRING was celebrated in Lyme Regis with the annual bonnet parade on Easter Sunday.

This year, youngsters and adults were encouraged to design hats and bonnets to the theme of a mad hatter's tea party - with prizes awarded to the winners.

Belle Hallet won the Easter bonnet competition, while Anne and Lynette Ravenscroft took top prize in the ladies' hat competition. Lily-Rose Howse was also awarded a prize for her creation.

Organiser Alan Vian, from the Lyme Regis Carnival and Regatta committee, said: "Once again it was a very pleasing event and we managed to have a parade in the summer sun.

"The important thing is that everybody had an enjoyable time. There was a good turnout of bonnets and lots of ingenious designs for the mad hatter's theme, which we had a lot of entries for.

"There is certainly no shortage of creativity in Lyme Regis."

Mr Vian is pleased that the event continues to attract crowds to the town.

He added: "It is an extremely popular event and we were lucky to have the good weather for the parade.

"People come to Lyme Regis from out of town especially to take part or to watch the event. It is something that people really look forward to and it is a great family event.

"It is great to see the same people entering every year and the children growing up with it - entering the different age categories as they get older."

Hats and bonnets were judged in Lyme Regis Baptist Church at 2pm on Easter Sunday, before the annual parade marched to the seafront at 3pm - with participants showing off their creative skills by donning bonnets and hats.

Mayor of Lyme Regis Cllr Owen Lovell, who helped judge the bonnets also handed out chocolate during the parade.

The parade was led by Cllr Lovell and will included a performance by the Lyme Regis Majorettes outside the Jubilee Pavilion to bring the event to a close.
