HUNDREDS of people flocked to Lyme Regis for the 'magical' torchlight procession.

Led by Mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Owen Lovell and deputy mayor Cllr Michaela Ellis, more than 300 torchbearers made their way through the Lister Gardens - following Bertie the dinosaur, as part of Lyme Regis Regatta and Carnival.

The three metre high dinosaur led the torchbearers onto the beach where a beacon was lit.

Andy Brown, chairman of the Lyme Regis Regatta and Carnival Committee, said: "It was truly amazing.

"Our friends from the Isle of Wight brought Bertie along, and the idea was that this fantastic illuminated dinosaur would be visible to the entire seafront area.

"It was a magical event once again, and a fantastic opportunity for children to get involved.

"We have some fantastic ideas moving forward to try and attract even more people to the torchlight parade in the future."

Lyme Regis Regatta and Carnival Committee secretary, Alan Vian, described the event as 'stunning'.

"It was one of the longest processions with 300 torchbearers and crowds of on-lookers made their way through Lister Gardens following Bertie," he said.

"It was an amazing sight to see so many torches in the gardens creating a stunning atmosphere as the evening light dimmed over Lyme Bay."

The event was part of Lyme Regis Carnival, which is taking place this week.

The popular fireworks display, will take place tonight (6).

The event was moved from the usual Saturday slot to allow holidaymakers to catch the spectacular fireworks.

On Saturday, the Tana Taiko drummers entertained visitors to the coastal resort, before the Street Heat Samba Band performed on Sunday, in connection with the torchlight procession.

After tonight's fireworks display, Lyme Regis Carnival will conclude with the grand procession through the streets of the town.

More than 100 ducks have been decorated to allow local businesses to take part in the event, with the carnival queen duck being crowned before the grand procession.

All proceeds from the week will be donated to local good causes.

The carnival’s main aim is to help families and holidaymakers enjoy visiting Lyme Regis.
