A MOTORIST has died after his car collided head on with another vehicle on the main road into Lyme Regis.

Police and two ambulance crews rushed to the scene at Charmouth Road shortly after 3.30pm today, Friday January 2.

Bridport police inspector Mike Darby said the man, believed to be in his 50s and from Yeovil, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The man was driving a Skoda Fabia and the driver and passenger of the other car involved in the collision, a Vauxhall Astra, are believed to be from Exeter and were unharmed.

The incident happened near Fairfield Park.

The air ambulance was called to the incident and landed at the Lyme Regis Football Club site.

Insp Darby added: “The man was believed to be from Yeovil. Our thoughts go to the man's family and friends at this time.

“The next of kin have been informed.

“Bridport police community support officers were first on scene.

“The Dorset Police traffic unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.”

The road still remains closed both ways between the Pine Ridge junction and the Anning Road junction.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “We were called at 3.25pm to a report of a two-car road traffic collision.

“The road was closed both ways and the air ambulance attended.”

Lyme Regis town councillor Anita Williams said her thoughts are with those involved, their friends and families and the emergency services.

Catherine Furness saw the Devon Air Ambulance land at Lyme Regis Football Club.

She said: “The helicopter landed but it didn't look like they took anyone away.

“It's very sad and it must be awful for the family.”
