a man suffered head injuries and two policemen were attacked in a street brawl in Bridport.

Four men and a woman from Bridport were arrested on public order offences following the fight in West Street.

These ranged from common assault and assault on police.

The 28-year-old was treated by ambulance crews at the scene.

Those arrested were two 16-year-old men and an 18 and 29-year-old and a 35-year-old woman.

All have been released on bail.

Geraldine Baker, landlady of The Ropemakers, saw the bust-up and called the police who sent 15 officers – some from Weymouth, Dorchester and Sherborne.

Mrs Baker said: “I heard a lot of noise outside about 11.30pm, it was after we were shut. There seemed to be a lot of youngsters outside, first of all I thought they were just drunk and mucking about but then saw people were getting hurt.

“It was a daft place to have a fight in front of the CCTV but they were right in the middle of the road with traffic stopping both ways.

“You see a problem and you report it, you just think it is your duty. They hadn’t been drinking in here. The police attended within a couple of minutes.”

Those arrested persons were part of a group that had allegedly attacked another group.

A police spokesman said: “To have a disturbance on this scale is rare in Bridport and is one we take seriously.

“Aside from the possible criminal prosecutions we will be bringing these individuals to the attention of the Bridport Pubwatch Scheme to consider sanctions against them if appropriate.”
