FIREFIGHTERS are reminding residents that controlled burns and large bonfires should be reported before they are lit following a false alarm yesterday.

Crews rushed to a property in Bridport at around 3.20pm to reports of a blaze.

Upon arrival they discovered it was a ‘controlled burn.’ False alarms cost money but also mean that a crew may not be available to deal with another incident.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service says planned fires should be reported by calling 01305 753166.

Neighbours should also be informed to ensure that the bonfire will not be a nuisance, that wind conditions are favourable as so not to adversely effect neighbouring properties and all efforts should be made to ensure the fire does not pose a risk to any property. Bonfires should also always be supervised.

Engine oil, meths or petrol should never be used to ‘encourage’ the fire.

Anyone with queries about what can and can not be burned at home should contact the local authority’s environmental health department.
