AN ARTIST has adapted the Spirit of Bridport logo with a Banksy-style graffiti twist.

The iconic image of the flaxen-haired woman sat on a throne while working twine has been reworked showing her holding a bottle of wine and a cannabis cigarette.

Four pieces have been found within the town so far in a style similar to the guerrilla graffiti artist Banksy.

The first is near the laundrette in South Street and the second on a Northover and Gilbert sign on Gundry Lane.

Others are on a wall at the Borough Gardens and in an alleyway next to Peaches Electrical.

The Spirit of Bridport painting has been used as the basis for Spirit of Bridport group and its recent Festival of Culture.

The original painting was created by Fra Newbery between 1924 to 1927.

Local artist Kit Glaisyer, pictured below, who is also the Spirit of Bridport group co-chairman, said: “In character it is a lighthearted piece and I feel it was not meant to be offensive.

“The Banksy element is clear to see. The graffiti itself is well presented.”

Kit added: “The town is still buzzing from the festival.

“The logo has just been recreated in a contemporary way.

“Some may say it is a street interpretation.”

Daryl Chambers, Bridport town council surveyor, appealed for the artist to get in touch.

He said: “The pieces are extremely creative and show the artistic flare within the town. However, they do still count as graffiti as they are on private property and will be removed with immediate effect.”

Mr Chambers added: “I do however urge the artist to contact me if they wish to discuss a possible graffiti project, such as the one at the skate park.

“Graffiti is a new, exciting art form and we wish to display the skills of the creators in a distinct and proper manner.”

Francis ‘Fra’ Henry Newbery was born in Membury, East Devon in 1855, but moved into the town in 1858.

He taught at the Bridport School of Art, which was formally based inside the Literary and Scientific Institute in East Street. Newbery painted many murals, including the Spirit of Bridport, which are on display in the Town Hall.

It is stated that the painting is his idealisation of Bridport’s skill, beauty and importance at the time of creation. If anyone has any further information on the graffiti call Mr Chambers on 01308 456722.
