THERAPY it seems comes in all sorts of guises.

For west Dorset's Tom Johnson it comes from fixing bicycles.

The 21-year-old is so convinced of its benefits he is hoping to set up a bicycle maintenance workshop for children and adults in need called Two Wheel Surgery.

He and his apprentice Tim Ross, 23, have started a crowdfunding drive to help them.

For himself Tom, who has suffered with ADHD all his life, has found the release of fixing bikes is helping through the trauma of the last days of his mum's illness.

He said: "I started it up because my mum unfortunately is terminally ill with neck, lung, spine and bowel cancer and is in her last days.

"I have been looking after my mum for 15 years and since the cancer started it really got to me.

I used it to distract myself away from the struggle of dealing with the situation and I ended up finding something incredible about myself - I am actually really good at fixing bikes and it provided me with a good sense of release and really built my self confidence.

"I now have a trainee who works with me who lost his mum through suicide last year.

"We both have seen the benefits.

"We are fundraising so I can start workshops to help people with needs ranging from, but not limited to, Autism, ADHD, cancer support groups, depression."

If the idea gets taken up Tom hopes to provide on and off site maintenance classes in schools and colleges.

He added: "We are already backed by six companies and we want to get better known and raise awareness about what we are trying to achieve."

Tom is aware of

"I never really fit in with school and had to have special classes.

"The main reason is the time I have been looking after my mum since the cancer started it really got to me distract myself away from the struggle of dealing with the situation and I ended up finding something incredible about myself - I am actually really good fixing bikes and it provided me with a good sense of release and really built my self confidence.

"I now have a trainee who works with me who lost his mum through suicide last year.

"We both have seen the benefits.

"We plan on developing a community support based project that benefits and associates with children and adults in need.

"We want to provide a safe, fun, engaging and interactive workspace with the ability to gain a valuable life skill and certificate upon completion of the course.

"The project is an educational program which has multiple health benefits both mental and physical, ranging from social integration, confidence building, developing a positive sense of self-worth, decreased stress, and depression alleviation."

Tom and Tim are keen to make sure they also emphasise the environmental benefit of bikes and want to include group members of all religions and race and encourage religious and racial harmony.
