RAFTERS braved the River Asker to raise money for the RNLI in a competitive annual race.

This year's West Bay raft race attracted 20 teams who battled it out for the title. This year's winners, 'The Hybid', were a team from Eastleigh Gym in Hampshire.

Hundreds watched the drama unfold from the shore as thousands was raised for charity.

Annie Taylor, raft race organiser from the Bridport branch of the RNLI, was pleased the event raised more charity funding than last year, and thanked volunteers for ensuring the event was a success.

She said: "Between them the rafters brought a whopping £2,450 of sponsorship which, together with the generous donations from the public, raised a total of nearly £3,700 - up nearly a quarter on last year.

"Together with thanks to the rafters themselves, I’d like to give huge vote of thanks to James Radcliffe, the harbour master, and his whole team, plus Ivor Bending, the safety diver and Mike Stoodley, running the safety boat. Between them they ensured the safe but hilarious running of the race. We must also give a huge vote of thanks to Christoph Dupuy of the George Hotel for his sponsorship of the event and the terrific evening of music."

The winning Hybid team was presented the Eric Hamblet Trophy by Stefan Brown, grandson of former harbour master Eric Hamblet.

Other trophies were awarded by mayor of Bridport, Cllr Ros Kayes. The Knights of Bridport Round Table took second place, captained by Paul Fowler.

The award for best dressed raft was presented to the Ice Screamers from Bridport Gig Club, captained by Helen Bolter-Griffin.

The Mystery Machine, by a team from Shaftesbury, was presented the Ernie Hix Trophy for top sponsorship after raising £474. Huck Nets' raft, called What a Racket, won the most entertaining raft award.
