A MOTORCYCLIST was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a crash near Dorchester.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on A356 shortly after 7pm last night after two separate road traffic collisions on the same stretch of road.

The first incident happened at 7.12pm when a man riding a motorbike was involved in a single vehicle collision.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene, as it was believed initially the man had life-threatening injuries.

He was airlifted to Dorset County Hospital, but a spokesman for Dorset Police confirmed the man was no longer in a life-threatening situation and was in a stable condition at hospital, with broken ribs and wrists.

Shortly after the crash, another motorbike and a car collided as they tried to slow down and avoid the initial crash.

A silver Audi estate, registered to a man from Yeovil, and a white Subaru Legacy motorbike, registered to a man from Ilminster, collided as they approached the scene.

Nobody was injured in this incident.

Dorset Police were forced to close the road for more than two hours after the smashes, from the Powerstock crossroads to the Toller Down Gate crossroads.
