A MAJOR search was launched last night after reports a paddle boarder was in trouble near Bridport.
Lyme Regis RNLI crew, coastguards and a helicopter were all involved in the search off the coast at Freshwater Holiday Park.
A member of the public ashore reported seeing a paddle boarder in difficulty.
Coastguards from Lyme Regis and West Bay searched the shoreline and the lifeboat swept an area between West Bay and Burton Bradstock, about a third of a mile offshore, but nothing was found.
The search was called off after two hours. The lifeboat was launched at 10.10pm and was stool down by Solent coastguards at 12.20am.
A spokesman for Lyme Regis RNLI said: "The search will not resume this morning.
"We are possibly treateing this as a false alarm with good intent."
