A MAN who threatened residents and assaulted police has been given a three-year Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO).

Daniel Carey, 30, from Bridport, was issued with the order at Weymouth Magistrates Court on Thursday January 29 after being found guilty of a number of offences last year. He received a restraining order preventing him from approaching staff at a pub in Bridport and a community order. He was also ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

Dorset Police applied for the court to issue the order – and was helped by evidence from the community and the Bridport and Area Pubwatch Scheme. Police were also given support by the Community Safety Team at West Dorset District Council.

Carey has been banned from all the pubs in Bridport which are part of the Pubwatch scheme.
Police Constable Scott McGregor of Bridport police, said: “Carey’s threatening behaviour spanned many years.

“As the Bridport town beat officer, my goal is to help protect the residents from being exposed to this type of behaviour.

“I am pleased the court agreed that Carey’s behaviour is not acceptable and the people of Bridport deserve protection.”

Carey was found guilty at Weymouth Magistrates Court in October 2014 of a number of offences including disorderly behaviour, assaulting police and urinating in public.

Under the terms of the ASBO Carey be anti-social manner, use threatening, intimidating, insulting, racist or abusive words or behaviour in a public place, be drunk in public, consume alcohol in any place other than licensed premises in Dorset and go enter enter any premises he has been banned from.

PC McGregor added: “I hope this order also reminds others that threatening behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated in Dorset and Dorset Police will take residents’ concerns seriously.

“Dorset Police will continue to encourage those with alcohol or drug dependency in Bridport to seek help and support through the local service provided by Exeter Drug Programme in Downes Street.”

Carey’s father Stephen said his son suffered brain damage at birth and has been a target for police for many years.

He said psychiatric reports show Daniel has significant frontal lobe brain injury and learning disabilities.

Mr Carey quoted the report by Dr J. K O’Shea which said: “It is clear that many of the problems which have resulted in contact with the criminal justice system and also his difficulty in coping with orders imposed by the court are as a result of a combination of learning disability attention deficit and possible frontal lobe damage.”
