BRIDPORT: A Royal Navy sailor from the town has added his voice to the national Remembrance campaigns launched by the Royal British Legion.

The online campaign from the RBL is called ‘#PoppySelfie’ where members of the public and service personnel can post a photo of themselves and their personal reasons for wearing the poppy across social media.

Each day until Remembrance Sunday, the Royal Navy is posting a selection of images of sailors to social media to support the RBL campaign.

Chief Petty Officer for Mine Warfare, Philip Nelson, 37, from Bridport, said: “I feel privileged to be able to wear a poppy while serving and in uniform. It humbles me to think of the men and women who lost their life fighting to make the world a better place and the small part that I play in that makes me very proud.”

CPO Nelson is the mine warfare chief based in the Middle East and working for the UK forces, who ensures that the UK ships are always available to perform their tasks. He has been in the navy since 1994 and cites his favourite job in the Royal Navy as working on board HMS Victory, because he can say the both he and Lord Nelson served on the same ship. Due to return home in the New Year, CPO Nelson will be reunited with his children Dylan and Alfie.

Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines have been practicing their drill training in preparation for Remembrance Sunday, when they will march in front of the Cenotaph in London along with the other two services.
