25 YEARS AGO:

May, 28, 1993:

STORMY: School children spending the night in West Dorset's Hooke Forest had to abandon camp this week as a fierce thunder and lightning storm raged overhead.

The 30 youngsters, aged ten and 11, had bedded down for the night after constructing shelters in the wood as part of a project about settlement.

ADVENTURE: A local schoolgirl has been chosen to take part in an exciting three-month ocean adventure.

Sasha Donkin, a 17-year-old pupil at Allhallows School, Lyme Regis, will set sail for the West Indies on the training ship Astrid in September.

But first she must raise £4,000 to pay for her voyage of a lifetime, and she is already planning a series of fund-raising events.

ROLLING: Bridport Youth Centre have bought 140 pairs of roller skates following a fundraising campaign launched by West Dorset MP Sir James Spicer with a £50 gift.

50 YEARS AGO:

May, 24, 1968:

CLIFF FALL: One of the worst cliff falls since the slip at Black Venn a few years ago has occurred in the West Cliff area at Charmouth.

Locals say that the blue-lias clay in this vicinity had been on the move for some time before the big slide on Thursday of last week.

An eyewitness said that thousands of tons of clay and rubble "slid gently down on to a ledge, caused by previous fall, and on to the beach."

CHARITY: Works for the Christian Aid campaign have raised over £200 in Lyme Regis during 1968.

In a letter to the Lyme Regis News, the local secretary (Miss E.R. Flatt) expresses her gratitude to all those who responded to the appeal for help for people in need.

LIVELY SHOW: Judging by their performance in a variety show at St Swithun's House, on Saturday, it is easy to understand why the Wessex Youth Players came back from the Dorset Youth Drama Festival, in Poole recently, with so many of the top awards, including the Special Drama Prize.
