Easter Sunday is synonymous with a classic roast lamb lunch and Dorset is packed full of pubs and restaurants that know how to get our taste buds going.
So, we thought it would be a good idea to pull together the best places for a Sunday roast in west Dorset, according to Trip Advisor, ahead of Easter weekend.
Crown Inn, Uploders
The Crown Inn is over 200 years old and is blessed with nice views, sometimes with grazing deer. The food is homecooked by Karin, the landlady and the bar is tended by David, the landlord.
The menu here often changes but homemade pies are a big favourite and the Sunday lunches have been described as ‘simply magnificent’ by one happy diner.
The Thimble Inn, Piddlehinton
Executive chef & proprietor Michal Trawicki leads a team of chefs using the best Dorset produce. This dog-friendly pub is happy to cater for all dietary requirements.
With two beautiful gardens with views of the River Piddle, bridges and the Piddle Valley it is an ‘excellent place to eat’ with a couple describing their Sunday roast as ‘outstanding’.
Yalbury Cottage, Lower Bockhampton
Yalbury Cottage’s award-winning restaurant is just two miles from Dorchester, set in the hamlet of Lower Bockhampton.
In the heart of Thomas Hardy's Wessex the restaurant is within walking distance of his birthplace and serve up ‘very tasty’ lunches and serve Portland crab too.
Seagulls Restaurant, West Bay
This small independent restaurant is well known for its seafood dishes, however, the team at Seagulls are more than capable of creating a ‘perfect’ Sunday roast.
One Trip Advisor review said: “We had Sunday lunch and it was just perfect lovely roast beef that was so tender and potatoes and veg all cooked perfectly.”
The Three Horseshoes – Burton Bradstock
Set in a 300-year old thatched stone building on the Jurassic Coast it is short walk away from the coastal path and the wonderful Hive Beach.
You may need a walk after one of their lunches which one happy customer described as the ‘best ever roast dinners we’ve had’.
The White Horse Inn, Sturminster Newton
This small pub nestled in Sturminster Newton has a spooky ghost story attached to it.
Apparently, a figure has been seen by witnesses stopping outside the pub and drifting into the wall.
Whether there are ghostly apparitions or not, one thing that is guaranteed is they do ‘the most delicious roast’ – according to one happy punter.
The Brewers Arms, Martinstown
A traditional country pub that makes homemade, locally sourced food.
There is plenty of parking at the Brewers Arms and it also welcomes dogs and has been known to serve up a ‘delicious and plentiful’ roast.
Sailors Return, Chaldon Herring
Nestled in the tranquil village of Chaldon Herring, The Sailor's Return is a traditional thatched country pub full of character .
This place does ‘absolutely epic’ Sunday lunches one happy walker commented after a trip from Lulworth Cove.
The Royal Oak, Milborne St Andrew
This pub has had its Sunday lunch voted the best in Dorset before. Situated between Dorchester and Blandford the pub is popular with walkers.
It does ‘amazing’ carveries and left one group drooling over the ‘yummy Yorkshires’ and described their experience as an ‘absolute dream’.
Marquis of Lorne – Nettlecombe
A 16th century country pub & Inn nestled in the beautiful hills of Nettlecombe, it has featured in guides such as the AA Top 500 Places to Stay, The Real Ale Pub Guide and The Good Pub Guide.
So, it is no surprise that you can be sure to get a ‘great’ Sunday lunch here in this ‘off the beaten track’ pub as one customer described their visit.
