The music of an American jazz legend is being brought to Lyme Regis.

John Coltrane was a saxophonist, composer and bandleader and was among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music.

Now, saxophonist Pete Canter will bring the music of John Coltrane back to life during a special performance titled A Love Supreme, on Sunday, November 5, at 8pm.

Mr Canter will be playing tenor and soprano saxophones, joined onstage by Philip Clouts at the piano and Adrian Smith on double bass.

John Coltrane was a master of bebop, a style of jazz characterised by its fast tempos, asymmetrical phrasing, intricate melodies, and rhythm sections that expanded on their role as tempo-keepers.

He recorded with many of its legendary exponents, notably Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk.

Mr Canter has recorded several albums which have been very well received and played at major UK jazz festivals including the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Teignmouth Jazz Festival, Bude Jazz Festival and Exeter Vibraphonic.

The evening will delve into some of John Coltrane’s great compositions like Giant Steps and Mr PC, as well as some of his sessions with Miles Davis such as Blue in Green and Jazz Standards which he made his own, notably, My Favourite Things.
