Firefighters from Dorset tackled a tractor fire at a property across the county border.

Firefighters from Bridport, Charmouth and Axminster were called to reports of a tractor on fire in Hawkchurch in Devon at around 7.50pm on the evening of Thursday, June 1.

The fire caused substantial damage to the tractor.

The cause of the fire is understood to have been accidental.

A spokesperson for Axminster Fire Station said: "Fire Control received a call from a member of the public reporting a tractor on fire at a property on the outskirts of Hawkchurch.

"Control immediately mobilised Axminster alongside Charmouth Fire Station and a water Bowser from Bridport Fire Station.

"Once on scene our crew confirmed 1 tractor towing a mower well alight in a field of cut grass and got to work with 2 Hose Reel Jets and 2 Breathing Apparatus wearers to extinguish the fire.

"Shortly after our arrival Charmouth arrived and we quickly utilised them as a water shuttle due to the remote location and lack of nearby water sources.

"Crews continued fighting the fire which had also affected a 5 x 5 metre of cut grass around the vehicle as well as dealing with a small running fuel fire from the vehicle.

"We were able to successfully extinguish the fire and discontinued Breathing Apparatus, crews continued to cool the tractor and surrounding area to prevent re-ignition using 1 Hose Reel Jet and a Thermal Imaging Camera to monitor the hotspots.

"Unfortunately the damage to the tractor was substantial.

"The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental."
