An indoor skate park has held its first-ever competition and organisers are thrilled with how it went.
2020 Skate & Ride in Gore Cross in Bridport has held its first competition in its two-year history. The Christmas Scooter Jam took place on Saturday, December 17, with more than 20 competitors taking to their scooters to win prizes with their best moves and most daring tricks.
Robert Ridge, a volunteer at the park and old-school BMXer, said: “We have always meant to do contests when we opened two years ago. Given that this was the first one it went really well, and everyone had fun."
The competition was completely open and held in a relaxed format, with scooter riders completing runs of the skate park and performing tricks in front of judges. There was even a competition for the best trick. Organisers were impressed by the sportsmanship and abilities of all who visited.
Mr Ridge said: “Best trick is great fun; we get behind each other to push ourselves to do our hardest tricks. It is a great thing to be part of and to watch.
“The crowd pleasers were the more acrobatic things, there were a few doing front and back flips over the jump box which was impressive to watch.”
Participants ranged from around 10 to late teens and came from all over the county to participate. Aside from the locals, the event attracted participants from Poole, Bournemouth, Devon and even one person from Guildford.
Mr Ridge added: “Thank you to our sponsors, the local town council for providing our funding, the volunteers who helped run it and everyone who participate.
“Contests like these inspire young people to take up these sports and to come and use the facility - especially in the winter months when as an indoor facility we have our busiest time.”
After the success of this contest, the park is hoping to hold more competitions next year, with a skateboarding event within the next six months.
2020 Skate and Ride is an indoor skate facility that was opened in 2020 and is run by volunteers. The facility welcomes visitors of all ages and abilities to take part whether they use a skateboard, scooter, BMX or skates, and they also offer teaching sessions.
