An exhibition and open day is being arranged by Bridport Camera Club to showcase the wide variety of photography being produced by members.

Imag(in)e also aims to challenge the popular misconception that all camera clubs are the same.

Programme Secretary Chris Hilton said: "The view is that camera clubs are full of old men comparing lenses and that there is a ‘right way’ to do photography’. In fact, the club now has roughly a 50/50 split between men and women, younger membership is actively encouraged and there even some school age junior members."

Mr Hilton said while there are widely promoted ‘golden rules’ of photography, understanding that you can break free of them is an important step towards finding your own creative voice.

He added: "After all, if we are all following the same rules and the same trajectory then who is going to produce the image that none of us have ever seen before? At Bridport Camera Club we want to provide an encouraging environment for members to produce work that means something to them individually, no matter how ‘off the wall’ it may or may not be."

An enthusiasm for photography is what unites the club, regardless of whether the device that captures it be a smartphone or camera. Members who don’t want to take pictures at all but just enjoy seeing and learning about them are equally welcome.

The programme for this year is all about helping people 'reconnect and rediscover their photography mojo'. Copies of the programme will be available at the event or can be found on the club’s website www.bridportcameraclub.co.uk.

The show will feature photographs in a print display and a slide show, while members will be on hand to discuss different aspects of photography. A light hearted mystery challenge is open for anyone who wants to take part.

Imag(in)e will be at the WI Hall, North Street, Bridport on Saturday, October 8 from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free.
