Two men have been injured in a plane crash on the Dorset and Devon border.

Emergency services were called to reports of a light aircraft crash at a solar farm near to the B3165 at Blackpool Corner near Middlemarsh, west Dorset, this afternoon.

The pilot sustained potentially life-changing injuries and was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol by air ambulance.

His passenger, who was walking wounded, has gone to Dorset County Hospital by land ambulance as a precaution.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "We are liaising with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch."

Dorset Police was called by the fire service shortly before 2pm today.

The fire service responded with one crew from Axminster, one crew from Lyme Regis and the specialist rescue vehicle and support pump from Middlemoor attended.

On arrival, firefighters found a light aircraft had crashed in a field adjacent to a solar panel farm but that the panels had not been involved.

The plane itself was 70 per cent damaged by the fire, according to the fire service, and two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets were used to extinguish the fire.
