The public has been thanked for their continued support after a successful event took place.

The Bridport branch committee of the RNLI has been raising money for the charity with two events, one of which was a success.

The Seatown Bar-B-Cue was led by John Parker, who has lived in Seatown for many years.

Preparations started early in the morning, with volunteers and members gathering to erect tables, flags, signs and bunting.

The Anchor Pub provided the food for the event, which included pulled pork in rolls with apple sauce, beefburgers with onions, hot dogs and veggie burgers, with everyone catered for.

Money was also raised by The Anchor Pub, who allowed for visitors to use their car park for a fee, which went to the RNLI.

Altogether, just under £5,500 was raised to support the RNLI services in the area.

Sadie Miles, chairman of the Bridport branch committee of the RNLI, said: "It was a really good result.

"We were a bit concerned about the weather to start with, as it was quite rough and we didn't know if the helicopter could come out, but by 4.30pm everything cleared and we were busy.

"It was an amazing display by the rescue services, with both the lifeboat and helicopter coming out.

"We raised almost £5,500 which is good, we've done it before a couple of times, the average is £4,500 to £5,000.

"I've been doing this since 1987 and it always amazes me that people are always very generous, that they come out and support it."

Sadie went on to share her thanks to the public for their continued support over the years, and the committee for their hard work.

The next event for the branch is the West Bay Fun Day, which will take place on the Harbour Green and in the Salt House.

Coffee, cakes and cream teas served, and there will be fun events, games and a souvenir stall outside.

As part of the entertainment this year, there will be a sea-rescue demonstration from a helicopter and the lifeboat team from Weymouth (weather and operations dependent), which can be viewed from the two piers at West Bay.

Sadie said: "The event originally stopped due to a lack of volunteers, but restarted a couple of years ago.

"It's very small, but hopefully it will be good, we will see.

"Its's a great event, kids love it, as do the adults, its all good fun."

  • West Bay Fun Day will take place on Sunday, August 26 from 10.30am.

  • Volunteers are also needed to construct the gazebo, run games and carry collection buckets. To find out more, contact chairman Sadie Miles on 01308 421996.
