Following a rise in visiting numbers, a museum has started a recruitment drive for volunteers.

Bridport Museum has seen visitor numbers soar by 45 per cent since its major redevelopment last year, and is now recruiting more volunteers to become ambassadors for the town's heritage.

Visitor services manager, Nikki Brotherton, said: "Bridport Museum is an amazing place to belong.

"Our volunteers are passionate about their roles here and are keen to share their knowledge, as well as to hear the stories that visitors have to tell.

"We are constantly discovering new secrets to celebrate our town's past.

"Being involved with the museum gives people a sense of pride in local heritage and makes sure that younger people hear the stories that have been passed on from the generations before us.

"Bridport Museum's transformation has been a real success and we are building on that by expanding our volunteer base."

The museum is seeking to employ front of house stewards to welcome visitors into the free entry museum, as well as people to help with family activities and school visits.

Within the role is a chance to learn about the heritage of Bridport, particularly the history surrounding the rope and net making industries.

Front of house volunteers can expect to learn to give rope-making demonstrations, as well as discover more about the history of a town renowned for making World Cup football nets, winning Wimbledon tennis nets, and the infamous hangman's noose, the Bridport Dagger.

Nikki said: "No experience is necessary but a warm and welcoming smile goes a long way.

"An interest in people and history is a must, as well as the ability to commit to weekly or fortnightly slots stewarding in the museum.

"You will be sharing shifts with like-minded volunteers who are keen to share their knowledge and show off this asset, described in comments from visitors as a 'local treasure'."

The posts are to be filled in time for the summer holidays at the end of July, with flexible shifts available.
