Teachers at a school were at the end of their rope, all in the name of charity.

Pupils and staff at Powerstock CE VA Primary School participated in a two hour skipathon to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

The children were taking part in the Jump Rope for Heart event, where children are sponsored to skip.

All 57 pupils at the school were using Double Dutch, crossover and more skills for the event, after receiving five weeks of training from parent Jess Bagwell.

Some of the children couldn't skip before the lessons, and some were against the idea, but that changed after the five weeks.

Jess said: "Every child improved within five weeks of lessons."

"It's great, the children are exercising without knowing, its good for their cardio and core strength."

Jo Cleden, sports co-ordinator for the school and teacher of the year five and year six class, said: "They've embraced it hugely.

"Lots of children couldn't skip, and now can, and those that could have now learned tricks."

The children were inspired by the Malcolm McLaren song, Double Dutch, which featured teenagers and adults skipping.

Through the video and practicing, some of the children were able to incorporate the tricks into the skipathon.

Pupil Cameron, who is in Mrs Cleden's class, didn't skip regularly before the challenge.

He said: "I originally didn't want to do it, but can now skip much better.

"I can do half a mile in 15 minutes and have noticed my fitness has improved."

The results and hard work put in by the students and Jess was clear to see, with some parents commenting that the fitness of their children had notably changed.

Nicola Bagwell, a parent at the school who was helping with the skipathon, said: "It's fantastic for them to learn.

"We have previously raised fundraised for the school, so to do something for an outside charity is great.

"The children have gone from strength to strength, and their fitness levels have increased."

On the schools participation in the challenge, Jo said: "This is just one element of us attaining the schools games sport mark gold.

"I feel very proud, our small school has achieved so much this year, getting our gold mark was the cherry on the cake."

Through their fundraising, the students raised £854.06 for the British Heart Foundation, a sum Jess Bagwell has labelled as 'brilliant'.
