A school Sport Relief activity proved not to be just for children, with one parent going above and beyond the call of duty.

Parents and guardians of children at Bridport Primary School were invited to take part in their Sport Relief activity, which involved running five laps (approximately a mile) around the school field with their child.

Dave Cummings, whose daughters Phoebe and Freya attend the school, decided to go one step further.

Dave’s wife, Anna, said: “My husband wanted to do this with our children, but also thought he could challenge himself at the same time, so thought he would go in for the whole day and constantly be on the move with all the classes.”

Mr Cummings’ plan was to start at 9am when the first class ran, and not stop moving by walking and running until all classes had finished which was due to be about 2.30pm.

He ran for five hours and 11 minutes, which worked out as 26.51 miles (140 laps of the field).

Dave said: “Really I enjoy doing things for charity and like helping the young kids of today.

“I try and do events as and when I can, and enjoy giving myself a task. It was a lot more fun than I thought. I hadn’t specifically trained in running for marathon distances, just for trail running and cross country. It was tough and after 20 miles I felt the cramp in my legs. The children kept me going, without them it wouldn’t have been possible.”

Adam Gough, deputy headteacher at the school, said: "Having Dave running at the same time was really inspirational for the children and he was really supportive to them all."

From his run, Dave raised £100 through Just Giving, all in aid of Sport Relief.

Speaking of Dave’s achievements, a Comic Relief spokesperson said: “We are thrilled to hear that Dave put himself through his paces for Sport Relief this year.

“We are always so thankful to our fundraisers, and the money raised by Dave and all of the school’s efforts will help vulnerable people, across the UK and the world, to live happier, healthier and safe lives.”
