BRIDPORT: A report out today names the oldest family businesses in the south west – and Bridport butchers RJ Balsons heads the list.

It was founded in 1515 and passed down through more than 25 generations.

The 31 oldest businesses have collectively traded for 6,143 years, according to new research, launched by Close Brothers Asset Management (CBAM) and Family Business United.

The ‘Oldest Family Businesses in the South West’ report identifies the oldest 31 family businesses in the region, each of whom has been operating for at least 150 years.

Other Dorset businesses high on the list are Stewarts Garden Centres, (1742), Blandford brewery Hall and Woodhouse (1777), Bridport brewers Palmers (1794), N.R. Stoate & Sons, Shaftesbury flour millers (1832) and Dike & Son convenience stores, Stalbridge (1851).

Commenting on the report launch, Penny Lovell, head of private client services, said: “As our research demonstrates, these firms are not just a flash in the pan, but with the right support and guidance, have the ability to endure and thrive through the generations.”
